Cristiano Ronaldo will once again suit up for his national team in this international break, as he eyes the record for most goals scored in World Cup qualifying history. He’s the joint top-scorer right now with Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz. He now sits at 39 and one more goal would see him break the record.

Upcoming fixtures

He will have two chances to do so in this October international break, as Portugal faces Ireland on Thursday and Hungary next Tuesday. They’ll play both matches at home, which might be crucial to give an extra boost of motivation for the number seven. Breaking the record at home, will also make this moment even more iconic and will let his beloved Portuguese fans enjoy it live in the stadium.

What do the stats say?

He’s scored 39 goals in 45 games, making his goal ratio 0.87 goals scored per game. The stats are definitely on his side, as his goalscoring ratio is extraordinary. This would mean that if he doesn’t score in his first game, he is highly likely to break the record in the second. The odds are in the favour of Portugal fans in this upcoming international break, even though Cristiano Ronaldo himself will not be thinking about the record, as he has previously stated: “I don’t chase records, they chase me.”
