Atlético de Madrid stunned city rivals Real Madrid, in what was one of their highest goal-scoring wins ever in the derby. Atlético dominated throughout the whole game, by executing a high press very effectively. Robin Le Normand headed in the first goal of the game, after he swiftly got in front of Tchouaméni to gain the better position.
Real Madrid then made the most out of their only two shots on target in the whole match and scored two goals totally against the run of play. It seemed inevitable that Kylian Mbappé would score, but Atlético were shocked when they conceded another goal from a counterattack, which seemed avoidable at first.
The home side did not let themselves get demoralised and kept pushing until they managed to score the equaliser just before half-time. Alexander Sørloth thumped in another header and brought “los colchoneros” level going into half-time.
As the second half started, it didn’t take long for Atlético to regain the lead. In the 51st minute, Julián Álvarez converted a penalty to put them back in front, after Arda Güler had committed a reckless foul on Nico González. Just 12 minutes later, Julián Álvarez curved in a magnificent free-kick and proved that he ranks amongst the best strikers in the world right now.
Antoine Griezmann came on in the 83rd minute and ten minutes later capped off a historical afternoon for Atlético fans by scoring the fifth and final goal. Atlético will try to feed off the momentum they’ve created, as they host Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday in the Champions League. On the other hand, Real Madrid will look to forget, get over this defeat as soon as possible and return to winning ways against Kairat Almaty also on Tuesday.
