The first LaLiga matchday is now behind us, and it’s time to look back and analyse the matchday’s best performers.

Nico Williams

Athletic Bilbao’s new number 10 shined in a coming-of-age performance, worthy of his new number. In the 36th minute, he won a penalty and converted it and seven minutes later he set up Maroan Sannadi to go up 2-0. Sevilla then managed to crawl back, scoring two goals of their own and Athletic Club now needed a hero to win them the game. Up stepped Nico Williams, assisting another one of his teammates with nine minutes remaining and solidifying himself as the best player of Matchday 1.

FC Barcelona

Starting off their quest to defend the title just as they ended last season, FC Barcelona defeated RCD Mallorca in a dominating 3-0 win. Raphinha scored the opening goal and in the 33rd and 39th minutes Mallorca were handed red cards and had to play the rest of the match with only nine men. It was smooth sailing for FC Barcelona from then on, as they comfortably saw out the game.

Espanyol

Espanyol accomplished the biggest upset of the weekend in a 2-1 comeback against Atlético. “Los Pericos” managed to keep their composure and force their way back, by overloading Atlético’s backline with crosses, which eventually led to their two goals. Atlético were left stunned by a scenario they’ve become too familiar with for their liking in the last few years.

Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano couldn’t have started their season in a better way, defeating Girona in devastating fashion. Rayo Vallecano will look to keep up their form, as they face Neman Grodno today in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Take Kubo

The Japanese winger kept Real Sociedad afloat, helping them get a draw against Valencia with a rapid finish from outside the box. He had a great game, showing off his technical prowess while creating chances for his team. It will be a great season for Take Kubo if he can manage to perform like this more consistently throughout this campaign.
